The viewer numbers for the UFC 177 prelims are officially out and they are definitely not the best. The UFC 177 prelims brought in a total of 436,000 viewers on Fox Sports 1, which is down about 49 percent from the stations average of 859,000. Previously, the lowest recorded views for FS1 were with the UFC 166 prelims, where it brought in a more impressive 628,000.
There are many factors that may have contributed to the prelim event’s low turn out, like the fact that there was one less fight in the prelims than usual. That means a lot of commercial breaks and downtime where viewers are flipping channels and not watching. There was also the biggest factor, the change in the evening’s highly-anticipated main event literally 24 hours before the fight.
While you cannot definitively say that there is a correlation between the views for the prelims and the Pay-Per-Views, they are usually a pretty decent guideline. There will always be some that don’t exactly follow the predictions made by the prelims, such as the previous low, UFC 166. The actual PPV event was headlined by Velasquez v Dos Santos III and made average numbers, despite the views for the prelims. For UFC 169, headlined by Barao v Faber, the actual PPV event was much lower than prelims.
