The boys over at BJPenn.com Radio caught up with Bellator title-contender Joey Beltran this past weekend. Beltran is currently preparing for his light heavyweight title fight on September 12th when he’ll take on Emmanuel Newton at Bellator 124. Beltran shared his thoughts on the upcoming title fight and explained why his new-found confidence is going to help him capture the Bellator strap. Here are the highlights from Beltran’s interview with BJPenn.com Radio:
Beltran first touched on his MMA ‘rebirthing’ in Bellator and his new frame of mind:
“I have a whole new mindset,” he said. “I’m attacking life and enjoying it.”
“On September 12th I’m going to take full advantage of this opportunity. I’m going to go out and finish Emanuel Newton and life is going to be awesome. It’s going to continue to be awesome.”
Beltran was asked to comment on Bellator’s increased competition level with fighters like Tito Ortiz and Stephan Bonnar among the light heavyweight ranks. He replied,
“Let’s not forget the two guys in the 205 finals. I have my eye more so on them than I do the Tito Ortizs or Stephan Bonnars, and rightfully so. Those guys deserve it.”
“They’re freaking beast, man.”
His thoughts on Bellator, the UFC, and the new-wave of MMA talent rising up:
“People are going to start migrating over to Bellator because the fights that Coker and Rich Chou are going to be putting on are going to be some crazy-gnarly fights.”
“UFC has over-saturated the market so much; very rarely do you know who’s fighting on TV.”
Beltran was then asked if he has ever contemplated an eventual move back to the heavyweight division. He stated:
“I would rather retire at 185 than go back up to heavyweight, just for health purposes.”
“I would never go back to heavyweight.”
Joey was then asked to comment on how his name rose to the top of the title contention list, following Rampage’s refusal to fight Newton for the title. Beltran replied:
“They said, let’s get the most entertaining mother fucker there is at 205; that’s Joey Beltran. You can’t argue that.”
Beltran also talked about his new-found confidence, which he feels was the missing piece of his game and will now make him a worthy champion for the Bellator Light Heavyweight Crown. He explained:
“I just never fucking believed in myself, like, in my core. I would always short-change myself and give away my power.”
“The mind is a powerful thing. When you believe in yourself you can do anything.”
“I believe in myself, right down to my core.”
“It’s going to be some shit, because now I believe in myself and I can take a baseball bat to the face without blinking an eye. People are going to have some problems.”
“I know what I’m bringing to the table September 12th and I know that I’m walking out of there with the belt and that’s going to be freaking awesome.”
From all of us here at BJPenn.com Radio I would like to thank Joey for joining the show and giving the fans an inside look at what to expect on September 12th. Best of luck Mr. Beltran.
